Asian Beetle vs. Ladybug

Learn to distinguish between beneficial ladybugs and problematic Asian beetles that can invade homes by the thousands.

Key Differences

  • More orange than red (vs. ladybugs)
  • Variable spot patterns
  • White "M" or "W" marking on head
  • Larger than typical ladybugs
  • More aggressive behavior

Seasonal Invasions

  • Peak activity: September-October
  • Seek warm overwintering sites
  • Attracted to light-colored surfaces
  • Mass aggregations on buildings
  • Enter through small openings

Problems Caused

  • Massive numbers indoors
  • Yellow staining when crushed
  • Unpleasant odor when disturbed
  • Can bite or pinch humans
  • Trigger allergic reactions

Fall Prevention Strategy

August-September Preparation

  • • Seal cracks and gaps in exterior walls
  • • Install or repair window screens
  • • Weatherstrip doors and windows
  • • Caulk around utility penetrations

Light Management

  • • Reduce outdoor lighting in fall
  • • Use yellow or orange bulbs instead of white
  • • Close curtains during peak invasion times
  • • Consider motion-sensor lights

During Active Invasion

Safe Removal Methods

  • • Vacuum beetles (dispose of bag immediately)
  • • Use soap and water spray
  • • Sweep into dustpan and dispose outside
  • • Avoid crushing (causes staining)

Warning: Don't crush Asian beetles! They release yellow hemolymph that can stain fabrics and surfaces, plus emit an unpleasant odor.

Timing is Key

  • • Most active on warm, sunny fall days
  • • Enter homes in late afternoon/evening
  • • Cold snaps reduce activity
  • • Early intervention prevents larger invasions
